Synagogue Service Etiquette

All men and boys…
…wear a yamulke (kippah in Hebrew) or head covering in the service as a sign of respect. These are provided at the entrance to the sanctuary.

Jewish men over the age of 13…
…should wear a tallit (prayer shawl) at morning services. These are provided at the entrance to the sanctuary.

Jewish women over the age of 13…
…may wear a tallit (prayer shawl) at morning services if they like. These are provided at the entrance to the sanctuary (not required) .

Prayer books…
…are in Hebrew and English. A few prayers are said in English, although most of the service is in Hebrew. Our Siddur Sim Shalom contains many transliterations (using the English alphabet to phonetically spell Hebrew words) as well as translations of every prayer. This enables those who do not read Hebrew to take part in the service by using transliterations and to follow along by reading the English.

Jewish but never learned Hebrew? – Read Hebrew This Shabbat!
An English-Hebrew transliteration of key sections of our Sim Shalom Hebrew prayer book, conveniently organized by page number, is available free on the web from Beth El in Omaha. It is designed to be printed and organized into a booklet one can use at Shabbat and holiday services (print on both sides of the page or simply tape the front and back of the pages together, then fold in half and you are ready to “daven” in Hebrew).

Synagogue Observance in Keeping with Jewish Law
For Sabbath (Friday Night through Saturday Evening) and Holidays
No cell phones, pagers, cameras, camcorders, palms or other electronic devices may be used in the synagogue during these times.
