From the 50th Anniversary Committee Co-Chairs...

In 2018 we will observe the 50th anniversary of the founding of Am Yisrael.  As long-time members of the Synagogue, we are honored to serve as co-chairs of the 50th Anniversary Committee.  Volunteer and donor opportunities abound and our goal is to have all our members participate as we prepare for the next fifty years.

Events to mark the 50th included Cantor Simon singing the National Anthem at the White Sox game in September, the Rabbi’s installation as President of the Rabbinical Assembly in April, and dedication of our new Torah scroll on Shavuot in May.

Our first event was September 10 when Cantor Simon led off the White Sox vs. Giants game with the National Anthem. Some may remember Cantor Simon’s performance eleven years ago.  It was very special.  This September's event was equally exciting, even more so as the Sox won that day!

Perhaps the most spiritual and meaningful occasion is the commission of a new Torah for the students of SJS.  A unique feature of our education program is that students, even those in pre-school, read Torah on Shabbat and Holidays.  This new Torah will be dedicated at Shavuot services on May 20 and we look forward to hearing the Torah read by many students that day.

The first opportunity to participate in the writing of the Torah was on October 15 when the Sofer made his initial visit. The Sofer was at Am Yisrael on three more separate occasions for letter fill-ins and educational programs.  There are many levels of giving which were detailed in the brochure distributed at Rosh Hashanah and in the mail.

Much help and involvement from the entire congregation is needed for the celebration to succeed and to lay a foundation for the next fifty years.  Organizing events, supervising children, making telephone calls, and encouraging friends and family to participate are ways to engage.  To volunteer, contact us at

We look forward to a wonderful year of celebration.
