 n of the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem and the subsequent exile of
  the Jews from the Land of Israel. The day also commemorates other tragedi
 es which occurred on the same day. It is a fast day and is regarded as the
  saddest day on the Jewish calendar. Due to the solemnity of the day\, rit
 ual practices parallel those of a traditional mourner at shiva\, specifica
 lly sitting on the floor. While not required\, congregants are encouraged
