Am Yisrael offers several programs geared towards families with young children.  All are designed with age appropriate activities and education in mind, within a Jewish context.

Torah Tots with a Twist

Sunday mornings, 9:30 – 10:30 am

An early introduction to Judaism in a one-hour interactive setting.  Meet others and explore Shabbat, Holidays and Jewish values. Play, sing, dance, pray and create art. Hear stories and have a snack. Build community and celebrate Judaism. Open to newborns through 3.5 year olds.  Child must be accompanied by a parent, other relative or caregiver.

$18 per session.

PJ Shabbat

Friday evenings, 5:00 – 6:00 pm

An opportunity for families to enjoy Shabbat through spirited singing, learning, play and fun activities. Geared towards 3rd grade and younger with accompanying adult(s).  Older siblings are welcome. Pizza dinner for $5 per adult, $5 for all children.  Reservations must be made no later than one week in advance.

Tot Shabbat

Shabbat mornings, Dec. 7 and May 9, 9:30 am – 12:00 pm

Geared towards 1st graders and younger, we offer activities, stories and songs to occupy and educate children while their parents, grandparents, other family members and friends are attending our main services in the sanctuary.

Shabbat Family Programming (SFP)

Shabbat mornings, 9:30 am until approximately 12:00 pm. Kiddush lunch follows.

  • Main services begin in the Sanctuary at 9:30 a.m. Our students and madrichim from 5th-12th grades help lead services.  There is childcare, babysitting and educational activities for children, 4th grade and younger, in second-floor classrooms.
  • Family Shabbat Tefillah (Prayers) in the SJS building library at 10:30 a.m. Spirited Tefillah and songs led by Mr. Sherman and Mr. Marc. Children as young as 3 years old chant and read from the Torah scroll. A D’var Torah is delivered by Rabbi Newman Kamin or Mr. Sherman.  Older students help lead services.
  • All youngsters on the bimah in the Sanctuary at 11:30 a.m. to sing concluding prayers.
  • Kiddush lunch follows in our Social Hall.
