Madrichim Program Overview

Our Madrichim help our SJS community in many ways. But none is more important than as role models to our younger students. Our Madrichim spend time in our classrooms with these younger students as tutors, reading stories, and assisting teachers and so much more. During this past school year Madrichim were instrumental in using their technical expertise that allowed our teachers to teach on Zoom without having to worry about Zoom problems and issues.

Madrichim work during SJS hours. They can sign up to work on both Sunday and Wednesday, only Sunday or only Wednesday. To become a Madrich or Maricha they must first have a 1:1 meeting with Mr. Sherman. During this meeting, the student and Mr. Sherman will review expectations and determine the best ways to utilize the skill sets of our Madrichim and match them up with the needs of SJS.

Mr. Sherman oversees the Madrichim on their assignments with feedback from classroom teachers and specialist SJS teachers. Mr. Allan Arnet provides coaching and guidance for our Madrichim. He meets with them 1:1 to help them better meet the needs of students in their classrooms. Post Bar/t Mitzvah education is another vital part of the Madrichim program. Hazzan Lawrence Szenes-Strauss (Mr. S.) teaches the Madrichim how to better understand Tefillah (Prayer), cohort learning on topics of interest to the students and a special discussion session for 11th and 12th graders to prepare for what they will face as Jewish students at college or university.  Morah Wendy Malkin teaches the 8th Graders more in-depth about Israel than they have learned up to this point in their Jewish Education.

If your teen is interested in becoming a Madrich or Madricha we encourage you to contact Mr. Sherman at csherman@amyisrael.org.
