Worship and Prayer Services

Eclipse Minyan

Yom Ha Shemesh (Day of the Sun)
Mon. Aug. 21

Minyan will be held at 2:30 p.m.

Summer at Am Yisrael

Summer is upon us and we all feel the pace slow down a bit.  We strongly encourage you to join us for Shabbat services as well as our daily minyanim.  When the weather allows, we hold our Shabbat services, both Friday evenings and Shabbat mornings in our lovely tented courtyard.  Casual attire is welcome and appropriate.  Come in shorts and flip-flops.  Come in t-shirts and sandals.  Just come!

Sunrise Selichot Services

Sunday, Sept. 17
5:45 a.m.
Tower Road Beach in Winnetka

Bring your own chairs, coffee, flashlight, tallit and tefillin.
The morning of Selichot is a time of introspection and renewal.  We begin in the darkness, and look deeply at our hearts and feel the fullness -- and messiness-- of being a human being.  With the rising of the sun over Lake Michigan, we welcome a sense of hope and new light into our hearts as we set intentions for growth, healing, and forgiveness.  Please join Rabbi Jordan Bendat-Appell of Orot and the Institute for Jewish Spiritually and the Am Yisrael community for a Selichot experience that will help you enter fully into the Season of Awe. Following Rabbi Bendat-Appell's program, Rabbi Newman Kamin and Cantor Simon will lead us in services.  Light breakfast follows.

Shabbat Morning Services

9:30 a.m. until approximately 12 noon
Led by Rabbi Newman Kamin and Cantor Stuart Simon.

  • Rabbi Newman Kamin presents an insightful d'var Torah on the weekly reading and then engages the congregation in a lively interactive discussion.
  • Cantor Simon, a truly gifted vocalist and musician, has been leading prayers for more than forty years.   He is an exciting and compelling presence on the bimah.
  • Fully egalitarian.
  • Triennial Torah reading.
  • Light kiddush lunch follows services.

‚ÄčAm Yisrael has always recognized that music is a most important component of worship.  Music can stir the soul, intensify emotions and revivify centuries old prayers.  Shabbat services resound with Cantor Simon on guitar, often accompanied by a percussionist and other musicians.  Our High Holy Day services are enhanced by a professional choir, keyboard, guitar and English horn.

Friday Night Shabbat Services

  • Led by Rabbi Newman Kamin and Cantor Simon.
  • Features guitar, percussion and oboe.
  • Designed to allow congregants the opportunity to daven, then go home to enjoy a leisurely dinner, welcoming Shabbat with family and friends.
