Tikkun Olam – Repairing the World – In-person activities temporarily suspended

Am Yisrael’s Tikkun Olam committee is in full swing. Over the past six months, the committee has researched and selected several Tikkun Olam projects that are now being made available to the congregation for participation. We are seeking volunteers for the following projects:

Northfield Food Pantry

2550 Waukegan Rd Ste 100, Glenview, IL 60025 (7 minutes from synagogue)

The pantry is like a small grocery store. A volunteer shift is two hours.  Volunteer hours are 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. On Thursdays the hours are from 8:30 a.m.-7:00 p.m. 2 – 3 people per shift.

Duties include:

  • Assisting clients while they pick up their food.
  • Assisting with receiving food donations.
  • Organizing and sorting food donations.
  • Stocking shelves, refrigerators, and freezers.
  • Helping clients check out.

CJE Senior Life – Lieberman and Gidwitz/Friends/Weinberg Center

1551 Lake Cook Road, Deerfield, IL 60015

  • Thursday evening reading to residents.
  • Monthly birthday celebrations at Lieberman, on the 2nd Sunday (unless there is a holiday), 3-4 volunteers.
  • 7th floor “newsgroup” volunteer to engage in news and current events.

Family Promise

Family Promise of the North Shore is an organization that consists of a consortium of synagogues and churches that cares for homeless families who find themselves temporarily without shelter.

Volunteers heat and put out dinner for the guests and eat with them.

Bernie’s Book Bank

917 N. Shore Drive , Lake Bluff, IL 60044 (30 minutes from synagogue)

BBB provides children’s books to those in need. Morning and early afternoon shifts are two hours. The last shifts start at 4:00 p.m. or 4:30 p.m. and last 1-1/2 hours. There are no evening or Sunday shifts.

There are four tasks in the warehouse: stickering, sorting, leveling, and bagging. The calendar is prepared 2-3 months in advance.
